Crank-Style Machine questions and Poll

Postby admin on 01 Jan 2008, 17:54

How long since you bought your first machine?

Would you (or did you) buy the same machine again?

Do you own more than one tabletop Crank-Style Machine?

Have you modified your machine(s)?

You didn't include the old brown Supermatic II, bought my first one from CTC about 15 years ago.

You also didn't include the EXP1000, got one a couple of weeks ago from RYOT. This little machine is a real jewel, so far. I've used it almost exclusively since I got it, and have not had a bad stick out of about 500. I read the RYO Mag. review and thought it must be hype. I bought one and found out it's the real deal. It won't replace my TOM or SM-c, but it has been a real kick to play with.

You bet.

Six (one is out on permanent loan)

One of the SMII's was re-built with the plastic cutter...it's kinda stiff but it works...packs a good smoke.

Thanks for participating!
Even though I had originally included the Other category, you made some valid points so I've modified the poll. Unfortunately that caused the results to be reset, I hope you'll continue to contribute to our knowledge and discussions (and re-take the poll).

I voted for the blue SM (only because it is the one that I'm using at the moment).

I've been pulling a crank for about 15 years and have stuffed a mountain of nasty tasting and or harsh smokes.

It's only been in the last couple of years that I've found some tobaccos that I thought were good. It's only in the last few months that I've found some tobaccos that are great (thanks in large part to reviews by Capt.U96 aka Mike and Dave Z, at SYO/MYO, now also at this forum).

I own several machines (2 SMII's, 1 T-O-M (ver 2), 2 SM-c's, and a Simron EXP1000). Any of the above machines (I don't have any experience with Excel's, but I would guess they also qualify) will stuff an excellent stick (for that matter so will most hand helds, although considerably slower).

All machines are just a means to an end, I would recommend that someone new to SYO not get caught up in a hardware quest (as it appears that I apparently have).

If given a choice between a gold plated cranker and crappy tobacco or a variety of great tobacco and a pack of papers... well, you would find me twistin' and lickin'.

It's all about the tobacco, baby.

I ve used HH for several years, starting of course w/ the Zig Zag (that nobody but me seems to like), then graduated to the Rayo Twin (black Premier Twin), which makes excellent smokes quickly. My wife didnt like the HH's so I got her the Super C. Not only is it extremely easy to make a pack in about 5 minutes, even my wife can operate it flawlessly, which is no small thing! When I came home to her sitting proudly in front of her 200 some smokes w/ a chit eating grin, I felt I made the right choice. "knock wood". So far so good, I dont see need for any mods and you can fit about 10 sticks worth on the top, so now I want one! Maybe the Top though, so I m keeping my eyes open, as I said, the HH is really all I need (its excellent for blending 1 at a time).

Thats all part of the fun man.
The whole MYO thing is about the fun,
the cool machines,
the blending,
the awesome tobacco,
and lets not forget the fun to be had in the forums.
When was the last time you posted a reply in a prepackaged tobacco forum ? lol

Yeah, I guess the "cool machines" are a part of the fun.

Any recommendation from me should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't take what I say too seriously, you don't need to either.

Everyone has their own priorities, finding the perfect machine is low on my list right now (although it looks like I've tried).

I'm looking for the perfect blend (it changes all the time) for me.
I'm pretty sure when I find it (I've gotten awfully close at times), any machine will crank out that "perfect smoke".

If I start with a blend that tastes like garbage, it doesn't seem to matter what machine I put it in, it still ... well, you know.

I have wandered these Interweb tubes for a long time, and it is a testament to the RYO Revolution web page and quality of the contributors posts on these forums, that this is the first forum I've ever posted to.

I don't know how long ago you got your first SM II, but if you average out 6 machines over 15 years it sure doesn't sound like an obsession with hardware, one new machine every 3 years seems quite conservative ;)

Very well stated! I doubt that anyone here would disagree.

I'm much more concerned that most people trying RYO for the first time will decide it's not for them due to the low quality mass-market tobacco that's readily available. Whereas if their first experience was with first rate tobacco, even if the HH injector is a PITA, they are likely to eventually find a machine that suits their needs. But that's another area of discussion...

I feel honored and humbled by your decision to join our forums, and a bit shocked that you've never contributed to the long established SYO board.
The smoker's are revolting! Join the RYO Revolution!

admin wrote:How long since you bought your first machine?

September of last year. I bought a handheld first, not wanting to spend money on a tabletop until I was sure syo would work for me. That decision didn't take long.
admin wrote:Would you (or did you) buy the same machine again?

Definitely. I just picked up my first carton of Zig-Zag Light 100mm tubes a couple of days ago (for a relative) and made my first 100. It worked like a charm. One of the reasons I bought this machine was in case the occasion to make 100s might ever arise.
admin wrote:Do you own more than one tabletop Crank-Style Machine?

No, but it is on my list to purchase. I have a handheld as a backup presently but would rather have another tabletop for convenience. I plan to buy that Supermatic which makes kings only as a backup.
admin wrote:Have you modified your machine(s)?

Nope.
Q: Why don't you quit tobacco?
A: My parents didn't raise me to be a quitter!
