I know that there are standard size filters as well as slims and superslim's but no idea on the actual diameters of the filter or the resulting cigarette.

Right, thanks. This was my second question.

dz wrote:I'm not sure I understand your difficulty resinate, I use both the Gizeh metal roller and the Job metal roller using filters with both and have no troubles. The Gizah is the 70mm roller and the Job's a 79mm. I use the Gizeh Feinfilter and Top filters in both machines and the appropriate papers for each. I don't know if this helps but I use these quite often and again, have no problems with either setup and use filters 98% of the time.

Dz, honestly I am not sure that I understand my difficulty either....Like I said in my initial post, I like the cleaner flavor of the rolling papers compared to tubes, but have not figured out how to add a filter without killing the taste or draw.

You are correct that the Gizeh and Top filters are very close in size to the size of the CS tube and the JOB roller does a produce a smoke of approximately the same diameter. Nonetheless, the taste of the filtered smoke produced using this setup is simply bad- it tastes like, well, filter to me. This led me to assume that the filter was getting compressed (or otherwise altered) in the process of using the roller. Also, I don't get this off taste when I attach a rolled unfiltered tube to a rizla base/filter/tipping paper.

frazzledglispa's topic Filters for Hand Rolling lists some common filter diameters and lengths.

Thanks Dan, I saw that too. Although its not clear, it appeared Frazledglispa dealt with some version of this problem also and wound up using another solution:

Filters

..... Rolling with a filter is a bit trickier. You need to try match the amount of tobacco to the width of the filter, and ideally the hand roller you are using should match it as well, It is easy to wind up with a cigarette that is sort of twisted because the paper has moved around the filter and the tobacco unevenly.

I have found a solution that I like that solves both of these problems for me. I bought a few David Ross filtered cigarette holders

http://www.davidross.it/inglese/contenuti/bocchini/sigarette.html

They come with little disposable (or cleanable) tar trap style filters that fit inside the holders. I tried smoking the unfiltered cigarettes using those tar traps instead of a traditional acetate filter. The resulting smoke was WAY to strong for me. But I discovered that a Wilsons of Sharrow streamline filter fits perfectly inside the spot designed for the tar trap. So now instead of rolling with a filter, I roll unfiltered and but the filter in the holder.

This has been the perfect solution for me, your mileage may vary.

resinate wrote:Hi all,

Like many in this forum I have noticed how much cleaner rolling papers are compared to tube papers- I notice it both in taste as well as dramatically reduced and improved sidestream smoke characteristics.

Smoking without filter irritates my mouth to the point I cannot do it regularly. I have purchased a number of filter and handrollers, but have yet to find the combo that fits right. Either the filter is too large and gets compacted which leaves a poor taste and/or hard draw or its too small lending the smoke to circumvent the filter altogether.

I have tried the Rizla 79 mm, the JOB 79 mm and the TOP adjustable roller. The full size rollers are slightly too small for the king filters I have tried- TOP, Gizeh, Arango and Raw. And the adjustable produced narrow sticks are slightly too large for the slimline Swan filters I have tried with it.

The only makeshift solution I have is to use the JOB roller to produce a full size smoke then then fit it into the tipping paper/filter base of a Rizla CS tube. Depending on the size of the rolled smoke this works to varying degrees. It imparts no off filter taste or hard draw. However, unless I get the size exactly right, which is difficult, there is a gap produced that over-ventilates the smoke.

Anyone know of a roller or rollbox/filter combo that actually fits without compacting or gapping at the filter? I prefer the 79 mm size, but would be happy to find anything that works properly. TIA

Hmm, I have had great results with the Job roller and Gizeh Fein or Top filters, as well as the Gizeh Metal roller with both as well. I'm not familiar with those filters though but can't imagine that's a big problem; they're just filters....I remember that, Frazzled solution was to employ one of those cig holders, not something I'd like to carry around but I guess it suited him.

I can't imagine why you're not getting decent results either, my rolled smokes are markedly better than the tubed alternative. I do remember getting the right technique did take some time but the poorly rolled cigs didn't have a bad taste so much as the poor burning characteristics. It's really just as simple as placing the filter in the cloth and filling the remaining empty trough created with tobacco. Adding the proper amount of tobacco is probably the trickiest part but that becomes second nature in no time.

I'm gonna try and duplicate some poorly constructed ones tomorrow and see if I can at least see what you're talking about. You should be able to get great results and nothing sticks out indicating where a potential problem could be. Are you adding the filter before the tobacco so as not to get any tobacco between the filter and paper? Maybe I'll think of something tomorrow when I can look at it while doing it.

My RYO experience started with a $2.00 Top plastic roller, NAS tobacco, and reused filters from my NAS Regular precons. I had no trouble making a decent, albeit rather short, filtered stick.

Reused filters? Ewwwwwww. My used cig butts always start to have a skunk scent when I have to put them back in my pack for whatever reason. I can't imagine that would make for a good smoke.

The one I like best is Mascotte. The Rizla works ok but I haven't used one in a while.

There are a bunch of others, but I would make sure the one you get has a cloth type nap as opposed to the cheaper ones with a plastic nap.

Off the top of my head, no. I'm not sure if we still have them.

I use the Rizla auto box a lot.
I use the following filters with no problems:

Arango (I like cause they are long)
Zen
Gizeh in box

I can be real sloppy and still have a smokeable cig. I guess it is even easier than HH.

Don't be afraid of the hammer method. NAS Flax papers don't fit the 70mm box, I had like 10 packs of NAS paper, no tubes, no money. A scissor made them fit.
I use a $2.99 regular size injector on 100mm tubes. A few taps, a snip, and I have 20mm filter Kings size cig available locally.
